Duke Energy Wants Florida to Prepare for Power-Hungry Data Centers | FlaglerLive

Duke Energy Florida on Friday filed a proposal aimed at preparing for the possibility of AI-feeding data centers being built in the state. With artificial intelligence and other technology driving massive increases in demand for electricity, Duke Energy Florida on Friday filed a proposal aimed at preparing for the possibility of data centers being built in the state.Data centers are one of the biggest issues in the utility industry nationally, as power companies look for ways to meet the demands of data centers that play a key role in such things as artificial intelligence and cloud computing. As an example, NextEra Energy, the parent company of Florida Power & Light, is working on plans to restart a nuclear-power plant in Iowa that could produce electricity for data centers.Steven Wishart, an assistant vice president with the consulting firm Concentric Energy Advisors, Inc., said in testimony filed with the Duke proposal that utilities are increasingly competing for data-center projects, with the competition “particularly intense in regions like Northern Virginia, Iowa, Texas and Oregon, where utilities have aligned infrastructure investments, regulatory policies and tax incentives to create attractive conditions for data center development.”Isn’t Duke Energy aware of a data center (DC Blox) being built at the town center, near Imagine School? Cables are being placed underground at Flagler Beach to accommodate them. Buildout costs are in the billions and rate payers/taxpayers will most likely help pick up the tab to benefit Google, meta, Amazon, AI, etc.

Flatiron Energy proposes 672MWh BESS at former Massachusetts fossil plant, pauses indoor BESS project in Boston

Flatiron Energy has launched proceeds to build a 672MWh BESS at the site of a former coal plant located in Bristol County, Massachusetts. Over the past fifteen years, several organisations, such as the US Economic Development Association and the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources, have carried out re-use studies aimed at figuring out how best to reinvigorate the Montaup site. From July next year, developers of BESS projects larger than 100MWh will have the option to obtain construction approval from the State’s Energy Facilities Siting Board (EFSB), as opposed to locally administered planning processes.According to a letter addressed to the BPDA obtained by Energy-Storage.news, Flatiron has decided to wait until the publication of the agency’s incoming BESS safety regulations before determining its next steps.Flatiron Energy is a US BESS developer, so far focused on the northeast.

China’s Renewable Energy Investment Helping Stem Fossil Fuel Growth, Report Says - The New York Times

Its vast investment in solar, wind and batteries is on track to end an era of global growth in the use of coal, oil and gas, the researchers said. It is increasingly clear, however, that China’s aggressive efforts to sell batteries, solar panels and wind turbines to the world is on course to bring that era to an end, a new report says. The Chinese dominance of clean-energy industries is “creating the conditions for a decline in fossil fuel use,” according to a report by Ember, a research group focused on the prospects for clean-energy technologies.According to Ember’s report, the falling costs of energy produced by Chinese-made wind and solar installations have allowed countries like Mexico, Bangladesh and Malaysia to race past the United States in recent years in terms of using renewably produced electricity (rather than fossil fuels) in everyday activities like heating and cooling buildings or powering vehicles.China has pushed for dominance in renewable energy partly for economic reasons and also to protect its national security by limiting its reliance on oil imports. But the implications for the planet’s health could scarcely be greater. To be sure, some countries would not be keen to rely so heavily on Chinese technology for geopolitical reasons. And few developing countries have the spending capacity to install the kinds of energy transmission and storage capacity that has allowed China to transform its own domestic energy grid so quickly.

Fossil energy 'significant' driver of climate-fueled heat waves: study - The Korea Herald

PARIS (AFP) -- Fossil fuel and cement producers have contributed "significantly" to the growing number and intensity of climate-change-driven heat waves, accord But Quilcaille said the study could aid corporate responsibility legal cases, which have not so far been able to draw on increasingly precise research linking carbon emissions with specific events. In one, a Peruvian farmer sued German energy company RWE, accusing it of being indirectly responsible for the melting of a glacier near his home.

Governor Patrick Morrisey Announces Comprehensive Energy Policy Framework to Make West Virginia Energy Dominant | WV Office of the Governor Patrick Morrisey

WHEELING, W.Va. – Speaking at the West Virginia Energy Educational Forum in Wheeling, Governor Patrick Morrisey laid out the framework for the state’s first long-term comprehensive energy policy. At the center of the policy is the Governor’s “50 by 50” generation plan to increase West Virginia’s energy capacity to 50 gigawatts by 2050 – an increase from the 15 gigawatts it currently produces. The policy framework set forth by Governor Morrisey makes an aggressive push to make West Virginia a leading producer of energy while keeping electricity affordable, ensuring safe and reliable service, and providing local jobs.In his address, Governor Morrisey detailed the future energy demands of the state and the country in the coming years, noting that PJM, a regional transmission organization (RTO) that coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in all or parts of 13 states and the District of Columbia, will likely need 110 GW of new generation capacity just to keep pace with demand growth and aging retirements.Governor Morrisey said he will work with the West Virginia Legislature, state agencies, and federal partners, as well as members of industry, education, and the public, to achieve these goals. His administration has already engaged the US Department of Energy and partnered with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory to assist with crafting different components of the overall policies.

On clean energy, too many Republicans keep forgetting that batteries exist

Conservative critics of renewable energy keep claiming that solar and wind are useless at night and during calm skies. That’s not even close to being true. Republican critics of renewable energy keep claiming that solar and wind are useless at night and during calm skies. That’s not even close to being true.During his latest appearance on CNBC, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stuck to familiar partisan talking points on clean energy: Solar and wind, the North Dakota Republican claimed, are “unreliable” in part because no one knows “when the wind’s gonna blow” and in part because the sun doesn’t shine “24 hours a day.”Indeed, the president himself has railed against clean energy technology for years, and when targeting solar and wind power, Trump has routinely repeated the same familiar mistake: After sundown or when the wind isn’t blowing, those energy sources are practically useless. The Washington Post’s Marc Thiessen, George W. Bush’s former chief speechwriter and a Fox News contributor, told a national television audience in July, “Just so people understand: wind and solar only work when there is wind and sun. We don’t have technology to store the energy from wind and solar.”

'A colossal train wreck': U.S. energy chief slams odds of net zero by 2050

Net zero by 2050 is "a monstrous human impoverishment program and of course there is no way it is going to happen," U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said. His comments, which were first published as part of an interview with the Financial Times on Monday, come as Wright and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum prepare to travel to Milan, Italy, for the Gastech energy conference. To meet the critically important warming threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius, as prescribed in the landmark Paris Agreement, global carbon emissions should reach net zero by around the middle of the century, according to the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit non-profit.The Trump administration official, who is scheduled to deliver an address on the U.S. vision for global energy security at Gastech on Wednesday, has reportedly warned that European climate rules could threaten the EU's trade deal with the White House. The EU also intends to purchase U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG), oil and nuclear energy products with an expected offtake valued at $750 billion over the next three years, seeking to replace Russian energy on the EU market.
