Energy Vault Advances Texas Sites - Los Angeles Business Journal

Westlake Village-based Energy Vault Holdings brings one of its Texas sites online and signs a deal for another. After reaching agreements on a series of projects in Australia and other global locations, Westlake Village-based energy storage company Energy Vault Holdings Inc.One week earlier, Energy Vault announced an agreement with Austin, Texas-based energy storage company Jupiter Power Inc. to add a 100-megawatt battery energy storage system at an existing Jupiter Power site in the Lone Star state. The Snyder battery energy storage plant is the first fruit of a strategy Energy Vault launched last year to build and operate its own plants. Until then, the company had partnered on projects with other power plant developers.Piconi noted the company has two other owned-and-operated battery energy storage plants in development: one in Calistoga in Northern California to store hydrogen-generated power for San Francisco-based Pacific Gas & Electric and the other project site it acquired in the northern portion of Queensland province in Australia.

Google's Fusion Gamble: Betting on the Future of Clean Energy

By partnering with Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS), a leader in advanced fusion research, Google has secured a 200-megawatt (MW) power purchase agreement (PPA) for its upcoming ARC fusion plant—a move that underscores fusion's growing role in the $1.5 trillion clean energy transition. Fusion energy has long been the “holy grail” of energy innovation: it replicates the sun's power by fusing hydrogen atoms, producing zero carbon emissions, abundant fuel (deuterium from seawater and lithium), and no long-lived radioactive waste.CFS's breakthrough lies in its use of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets, which enable compact, cost-effective fusion reactors. Its SPARC prototype, under construction in Massachusetts, aims to achieve net energy gain (Q>1) by 2027—a milestone no private company has yet reached.Google's 200 MW commitment is the largest corporate fusion PPA to date, but its strategic value extends beyond energy procurement. By locking in a customer before commercial fusion exists, CFS reduces market risk—a critical factor for attracting capital to high-risk, long-gestation projects. If fusion succeeds, it could disrupt global energy markets. CFS estimates its technology could supply 50% of global electricity by 2050, displacing coal, natural gas, and even renewables. For investors, this creates opportunities across the ecosystem: - Direct plays: CFS, which may seek a SPAC or IPO as it scales.

Energy independence crucial as China and Russia expand fossil fuel use | Fox News

Radical environmental activism against U.S. energy development threatens national security by handing strategic advantages to authoritarian regimes like China and Russia. But the reality is that these resources remain vital to America’s national and economic security, and the only ones more eager than green groups to end our country’s energy development are geopolitical rivals like Russia and China. In April, the country bragged that for the first time, it was running on 100% renewable energy. Later that month, a grid failure created a nationwide blackout that risked lives and cost the country nearly a half-billion dollars.Generating electricity solely through renewables makes electric grids more prone to collapse, and requires incredibly expensive upgrades to energy infrastructure that leads to higher electricity prices for consumers.Making the United States more dependent on renewable energy would make the U.S. electricity grid less reliable and threaten the nation’s economy. Spain is a pertinent example.

Hidden source of clean energy could power Earth for 170,000 years - ABC News

Sources of hydrogen could be hiding amid the Earth's crust -- enough to power Earth at its current energy needs for the next 170,000 years, according to a paper published in Nature Reviews Earth & Environment on Wednesday. Production followed by the burial of CO2 waste or from renewable energy sources -- such as wind or solar -- could also be future sources of hydrogen, the researchers said. Fertilizer used for agriculture is produced by hydrogen, and the gas also serves as a "key energy component" to a carbon-neutral future, the researchers said.

Clean energy's political test looms now that Trump bill is law

Both chambers of Congress are narrowly divided and up for grabs next year. The 2026 midterms will test clean energy's uncertain political salience as advocates attempt to tether it to economic matters that voters prioritize.Reality check: The political relevance of low-carbon energy is unclear at best.Nor did emphasizing clean energy investments stop them from losing the Senate or White House last year, despite messaging on jobs and costs."Despite falsely proclaiming their concerns, House Republicans — including some of their most vulnerable members — knowingly voted to cut jobs, slash investments, and raise energy costs in their districts when they voted for the Big, Ugly Bill," DCCC spokeswoman Courtney Rice tells Axios.

With 'Big Beautiful Bill,' U.S. to Reverse Course on Clean Energy - Yale e360

The loss of federal support is expected to curb the buildout of wind and solar by more than 70 gigawatts by 2030, driving up household energy costs by $165 per year, according to a new analysis from Princeton University. The gutting of federal support for renewable energy defied the predictions of many experts, who believed that Republicans in Congress would preserve tax credits that supported thousands of new clean-tech jobs, mostly in GOP strongholds.A new report from energy think tank Ember shows that China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and other Asian nations are electrifying far faster than the U.S., meaning they are increasingly relying on electricity, rather than oil, gas, and coal, to fuel cars and supply heat.Last year, China installed more than half of all new wind and solar globally while attracting three out of every four dollars invested in clean-tech manufacturing. “China will be the world’s first electro-state, the global clean tech hegemon,” said Jesse Jenkins, an energy expert at Princeton. The Republican spending bill, signed into law Friday, will reset the course for the U.S. energy sector, analyses show.

AI power demand poses global supply risks, says Hitachi Energy

In an interview with the Financial Times, Hitachi Energy CEO Schierenbeck urged government action on AI's unpredictable power demands. Analysts at consultancy company Rystad Energy told FT that AI's power demands could potentially stabilise electricity grids if tech companies set maximum power limits and align AI model training with periods of abundant renewable energy. The increasing electricity consumption by tech companies for AI training poses risks to global power supply stability, according to Hitachi Energy CEO Andreas Schierenbeck. The International Energy Agency forecasts that data centre electricity usage will double to 945 terawatt-hours (TWh) by 2030, surpassing the current consumption of countries such as Japan.A US Department of Energy (DOE)-backed report, released in December last year, indicated that data centre power demand is projected to double or triple by 2028.

Imports made up 17% of U.S. energy supply in 2024, the lowest share in nearly 40 years - U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)

Energy Information Administration - EIA - Official Energy Statistics from the U.S. Government In our Monthly Energy Review, we convert different measurements for different sources of energy to one common unit of heat, called a British thermal unit. We use British thermal units to compare different types of energy that are not usually directly comparable, such as barrels of crude oil and cubic feet of natural gas.Data source: U.S. Energy Information Administration, Monthly Energy Review Data values: Primary energy overviewIn 2024, the United States imported about 17% of its domestic energy supply, half of the record share set in 2006 and the lowest share since 1985, according to our Monthly Energy Review. The decline in imports’ share of supply in the previous two decades is attributable to both an increase in domestic energy production and a decrease in energy imports since 2006.
